Environmental Graphic Design. How does it navigate our life?

Some people would ask what is environmental graphic design?

Well, we are right here to break it down to your and tell you how it manages to navigate our everyday life without us even realizing the importance of it.

Environmental graphic design or as some called it “EGD” is including many parts of graphic design such as architecture, art, landscape, navigation, signs, lights and so much more parts mainly in the infrastructure in cities, villages and places that people are living.

Thorugh maps, places, typography and messages, EGD is the option to understand when it comes to train stations, road signs, shop signs, advertising signs, billboards and the whole situation of it.

It is finding a simple way of explaining and giving guidance to people to do and follow our everyday duties.   By doing this, you can connect a single person to a particular place, guide him how to get there and all of this happens in a blink of an eye. It’s a no brainer.

Here are some of the most popular and used EGD in the last century by people:

  • Wayfinding systems
  • Placemaking and identity
  • Different exhibition designs
  • Public installations
  • Themed and branded environments (stadiums, billboards, buildings)

Of course, there are more than that but these are pivotal for our everyday life, especially in the cities, where we have roads, train stations, public transport services, stadium events, etc.

In other words, we can conclude that environmental graphic design can be also said to be “surrounding” us in the city.

These types of designers are professional designers who work in big advertising and marketing agencies and know how to put up big campaigns in multiple spots. This can include posters around town, headlines on public transport, big billboards, building painting, digital screens and 3d animations.

As far as graphic design is in the conversation, its impact on the environment is colossal. Everywhere we go, the places we visit, in our recent country and outer will have environmental graphic designs of brands, businesses, products, services and notable people.

With the development of the digital era, we can witness some incredible processes going on. The only problem is that sometimes the marketing campaigns and graphic exposure is too aggressive.

It happens when multiple companies want to position their brand on pivotal places like centres, office buildings, airports and big cities.

Despite all of this, environmental graphic design is showing no signs of slowing down, so it would be intriguing where it would take us next.  Maybe space?!
